Supporting our students

students receiving support from student support team

The Student Support Department provides support for students in all aspects of their lives at the BSO, inside and outside school.

Support and advice is offered on a confidential and impartial basis on a wide variety of issues which may be directly or indirectly affecting your studies. This may include support with your learning, disability support, help with budgeting and finance, bereavement and personal and childcare issues.

Learning support

Our Student Learning Advisor provides academic support including exam preparation and essay writing, and specialises in supporting students who have English as an Additional Language (EAL). Suport is offered on a group and one-to-one basis.

Welfare advice and pastoral care

Our Student Support Officer operates an open-door policy and is available to give advice and support on issues such as:

  • Higher Education student finance
  • Personal issues
  • Childcare issues
  • Other sources of funding
  • Budgeting advice

Learning difficulties and disabilities

We work closely with students who have learning difficulties, disabilities and long-term health conditions such as dyslexia or depression, and have links with a local needs assessment centre that can recommed appropriate support to suit individual needs. We can assist with the following:

  • Applying for disabled students allowance
  • Implementing reasonable adjustments
  • Diagnostic assessments
  • Technical needs assessments
  • Provision of support workers

If you have a disability or health condition we would strongly encourage you to let the Admissions team know from the outset. This way, appropriate provisions can be made to support you throughout your application to the BSO, and ensure everything can be in place for the start of your studies. If you would like to discuss your personal needs, or any reasonable adjustments which may be required for you to access the course,

All BSO students have access to free confidential counselling with a professionally trained and qualified counsellor by appointment.

Accommodation is an important issue for many of our students and there are a wealth of options to suit different budgets and requirements. Many of our students live together in flat and house shares and the BSO holds accommodation events and has a Facebook page to help students find suitable accommodation. We are also working with partner organisations to provide additional accomodation support, including vetted lists of properties and landlords, and advice on contracts and tenant issues - more details to follow.
