The
BSO is located in a fascinating part of London. Southwark,
and especially the Borough area, is exploding with life
and character.
One of the reasons for the spurt of growth here is
the good public transport. The BSO is a minute from
Borough tube station and on several useful bus routes
(including nos 35, 40 and 133: Transport for London
can give full details.)
Southwark is a short hop across the river from the centre
of city life – fringe and mainstream theatre, comedy
shows, music venues, restaurants, clubs, museums and
galleries.
On and off the high street are clubs, sport and fitness
centres, yoga centres, delis and plenty of small cafes
and wine bars to meet in (the Latin American café
is a particular favourite). Plus plenty of pubs.
By the river is the Globe Theatre, where you can watch
some of the capital’s finest theatrical productions
for as little as £5. The Tate Modern and the Millennium
Bridge make a walk along the river front a delightful
way to relax.
The atmospheric Borough Market is open to the public
selling fresh produce and an ever growing range of inexpensive
artisan food. The stalls selling excellent fruit and
vegetables at wholesale prices are a big draw for students.
Spotting film locations is a popular game: parts of
Bridget Jones’s Diary and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking
Barrels are just two of the movies shot in the area.
