We
use a wide variety of teaching and learning methods at
the BSO. You will experience some traditional whole-year
lectures in some subjects and some innovative learning
methods in others, the whole mixture providing the most
effective and modern learning environment.
Course delivery methods include:
• Clinical supervision – intensive one-to-one
tuition in the clinic, with real patients. This is where
you will learn and gain experience of managing particular
problems, making clinical judgements such as diagnosis
and evaluation, how to select particular treatments
to correct specific problems and develop interpersonal
skills
• Practical sessions – where you practise
technique rather than simply hearing or reading about
it
• Tutorials and seminars – for in-depth
discussions
• Self-managed learning – where you reflect
on your work, pursue areas of special interest to you
and gain a deeper, more natural familiarity with the
subjects. A key part of this will be your use of the
professional development portfolio where you learn to
set your own goals and evaluate your progress and learning
needs in a professional manner.
The BSO’s excellent learning resources make active
learning a pleasure. You will be able to log onto to
BONE, the BSO’s own virtual learning environment,
view videos and demonstrations made by faculty especially
to support the M.Ost, use message boards and conferences
to work collaboratively with teachers and students,
and assess your own progress online.
External visits in the UK and abroad are arranged and
you will be encouraged to attend regional conferences
and meetings so you can experience different approaches
to osteopathy and broaden your understanding of the
practice. As you progress, you will be able to select
from a range of elective specialist and community clinics,
and to choose particular areas of osteopathy in which
you may elect to study more deeply.
