Advancing osteopathic knowledge and enabling integrated practice

We have launched a new MSc Osteopathy (pre-registration course), designed specifically for qualified physiotherapists and medical doctors. We are excited to offer this new course and be part of a growing culture of integration that sees osteopaths, physiotherapists and medical doctors working to extend their respective disciplines.

In our experience, integrating physiotherapists and doctors within our programmes in the past has allowed a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care, which enriches the student experience for everyone involved, as well as extending our profession in terms of research, osteopathic education and clinical practice. The new qualification formalises the way that healthcare practitioners with prior qualifications can build upon their existing knowledge and learning when they choose to study osteopathy.

The new MSc programme is open for applications now, beginning in September 2012.

Key facts about the Pre-Registration qualification

  • The MSc is a two year full-time course that takes places over 45 weeks each academic year compared to the tradition 32 week academic year (equivalent to three years of study in a more normal timetable)
  • Students complete a minimum of 1,000 hours of supervised osteopathic clinical practice, fulfilling the GOsC criteria for pre-registration.
  • Our MSc Osteopathy (pre-registration) students will work alongside M.Ost students, giving opportunities to share experiences and learn from one another.
  • Applicants must hold an appropriate physiotherapy or medical degree
  • Additionally, successful candidates must demonstrate evidence of significant post-graduate experience of working in musculo-skeletal medicine
  • Successful completion of the MSc will enable graduates to apply for registration with the GOsC, and practise alongside practitioners holding established qualifications such as Diplomas, BSc, BSc (Hons), M.Ost and doctoral degrees.
