Congratulations to the Class of 2011

Nearly ninety graduands gathered at Queen Elizabeth Hall in the London South Bank Centre on 3 November 2011 to receive their degrees.

This is only the second year to have graduated with our unique Master of Osteopathy (M.Ost) degree and our students continue to excel, with 12 students achieving a distinction this year. The Faculty also awarded 10 prizes for outstanding students, with Hollie Barter winning the Principal’s Prize for Clinical Excellence and Lisa Dennison winning the Silver Medal for best overall performance in the final two years of the course.

The BSO’s patron, HRH The Princess Royal, was the guest of honour, conferring degrees and meeting faculty members, students and their proud families. She was joined by Charles Hunt, the BSO’s Principal, Professor Les Ebdon CBE, Vice Chancellor of the University of Bedfordshire and John Lant, Vice-Chair of the BSO Board; as well as special guests including the Mayor of Southwark, Councillor Lorraine Lauder and the Mayor of Lambeth, Councillor Christiana Valcarcel. A number of the BSO’s Vice Patrons were also in attendance, including Dame Beryl Grey and Lutchman Naidoo.

An Honorary Fellowship was awarded by the BSO to Professor Clive Standen, previous Principal of the BSO and current Associate Professor and Associate Head of School for Osteopathy at Unitec in New Zealand. The award recognised Clive’s long service to osteopathy, in particular on the international osteopathic stage as Chair of the Board of Directors of the Osteopathic International Alliance.

An Honorary Doctorate of Science was awarded by the University of Bedfordshire to Professor Ann Moore, in recognition of her key role in progressing osteopathic research as Chair of the National Council for Osteopathic Research (NCOR). With a background in physiotherapy, Ann has worked with osteopaths and as an advocate for the profession for many years, helping to integrate osteopathy with other healthcare professions and drive its research agenda forwards.

In his speech, BSO Principal and Chief Executive Charles Hunt recognised the hard work involved in achieving an M.Ost qualification – noting that the graduands would have undertaken nearly fifty separate assessments during their studies, and reflecting that each person had really earned their place in the graduation ceremony. As well as marking key BSO achievements this year, including its placing in the top 100 Best Places to Work in the Public and Charitable sector and the very high levels of patient satisfaction recorded in a recent survey with over 93% very or completely satisfied with the treatment they’d received in the clinic – he restated the BSO’s commitment to providing osteopathic health care to those who would not normally be able to access it. The BSO’s portfolio of clinics provided over 43,000 appointments over the last year, with half of them made available at concessionary rate or free of charge, thanks to the trusts and supporters who help fund this work: Charles Hunt urged new graduands to continue to provide affordable and accessible osteopathic care within their communities.

M.Ost graduate Lisa Dennison, winner of the BSO silver medal for achievement thanked HRH The Princess Royal on behalf of her fellow students. She told the graduands “that we should be extremely proud because it was far from easy and we’re now part of one of the most rewarding professions” and commented that the graduating year had come together “from all different walks of life but we shared a common belief in osteopathy and a desire to become the best osteopaths we could”. Lisa thanked the BSO staff and faculty, commenting on “what great teachers we had and how lucky we’ve been to have benefitted from their experience”. She reserved a special mention for the research team and the “fabulous and ever–smiling library team”.

Following the ceremony, our Patron joined guests for the reception and photographs.

We congratulate the graduating class, Professor Standen and Professor Moore, and wish them every success in their future careers.
